Basehead

Basehead is the first font created by Boston, MA based TeA Curran from Grillecheese Fonts in 1997, originally created for his ‘zine “Xandu” and because he is such a nice guy, he has released it to the public for free. Why do I like Basehead? Initially I was drawn to this font by my love for grilled cheese sandwiches, and later appreciated Basehead because of the funky weird letterforms that TeA has used to create this font – it is pretty legible and remains strange. Download Basehead TTF from Grilledcheese.com.

Takraf VEB

The Takraf font family is based on the old logotype from the VEB Schwermaschienenbaukombinat (DDR) and comes to us from Jan Sonntag at Sonntag Fonts in Laroque, France. This face is pretty unique in that it is supplied in four style that are very distinct – Takraf 3d (letterforms on 3d cubes), Takraf-Block (letterforms with dark shadows), Takraf-Linie (letterforms with shadow that is not filled in), anmd Takraf-VEB (letters are knocked out of solid, flat boxes).  A solid choice for headlines, drop-caps, logo designs and anything that needs a firm blocky base. WIth its unique hard angular style this could fall into a more modern “dutch” type design category. Download Takraf OTFs.

Pixelstitch

Pixelstitch is a very nice donation-ware truetype front from Wernau, Germany based designer Anke Arnold of Anke-Art. Is it chunky bitmapped pixels or is it stitched threads making the letterforms? Maybe somewhere in between. If you are looking for a digital version of an old school stiched sampler, Pixelstitch is a unique font to use in your design.Download the pixelstitch truetype font.

Pusab

Pusab is a fun one to kick off the weekend with, from Ryoichi Tsunekawa at Flat-It foundry in Japan. (Ryoichi also brought us the very nice sans serif Bebas that we posted a few months back). Need something fun, bubbley, bouncey, overstuffed and funky? Pick Pusab – a great font to use for cool bubbley headlines. Ryoichi wants you to smile. Uppercase, Lowercase (which looks just like a scaled down uppercase), lots of punctuations and accented characters, sure to lighten your design.  Download Pusab OTF.

Sertig

Sertig is a free opentype face that comes to us from Slovakian WordPress theme designer Dannci, via Type the Font. This font contains 371 Characters – upper case, lower case, numerals, punctuation and a lot more – making it an ideal font to use in a lot of situations. A Swiss influenced sans-serif face like this is always good to have on-hand, it is pretty straight forward with its grotesk characteriscs and adds interesting design elements that become noticeable at larger sizes – check out that angular facet on the bottom of the G and the leaning top of the letter I, at smaller sizes it fits in nice where any other swiss face will do. Sertig reminds me a bit of an old Bistream favorite, Swiss721. Download Sertig OTF file.
